Bed bugs are no one's fault. The EPA says anyone can get them. If you think you have them in your Wichita home, a calm start helps.

What are the signs of bed bugs?

  • Small, whitish shed skins and rusty spots on bed sheets

  • Live bed bugs of any size

  • Eggs and casings in cracks where adults hide

  • A sweet, musty smell when the problem is large

Bites alone are not a reliable sign. The EPA says they can look like other bites. Our post Are Those Bed Bug Bites? explains more.

Where do bed bugs hide?

  • Mattress and box spring seams and piping

  • Bed frames and headboards

  • Under the thin cloth on the bottom of a box spring

  • Sofas, chairs, and curtain folds

  • Behind picture frames and in outlet and switch plates

  • Luggage and bags

Our 10-minute bed check shows you how to look.

What should you do first?

  1. Stay calm, and keep sleeping in your own bed if you can.

  2. Take photos, and capture a bug if you can. The EPA says to have it identified before you take other steps.

  3. Skip bug bombs. The EPA warns that some total release foggers are very flammable, and outdoor products should never be used indoors.

  4. Seal infested bedding and clothes in plastic bags before you wash them.

  5. Call a licensed professional. You can text us a photo.

Do bed bugs spread disease?

The EPA says bed bugs are not known to spread disease. Bites are often painless, and some people have allergic reactions.

Staying at a Wichita hotel?

The Kansas Department of Agriculture tells lodging businesses to report bed bugs and use a licensed pest control operator. See its bed bug handout. Our guide, Bed Bugs and Travel, covers what to check.
