Ants are one of the most common household pests. While they may seem harmless at first, they can quickly become a frustrating nuisance once they find a food source inside your home.
When a single ant discovers food, it leaves behind a chemical scent trail that guides other ants from the colony directly to the source. Before long, you may notice what looks like a “highway” of ants traveling across countertops, tables, floors, or walls.
Because ants are so small, they can easily go unnoticed at first. By the time homeowners begin seeing them regularly, the colony has often already established a consistent foraging route inside the home.
What Causes Ants?

Ants enter homes in search of food and moisture that they can bring back to their colony. Since ants eat many different types of foods, they will explore almost anywhere in a home looking for a reliable source.
Common areas where ants are found include:
• Kitchens
• Bathrooms
• Bedrooms
• Trash areas
• Pet feeding stations
• Vehicles or garages
Different species of ants are attracted to different types of food and environments. Some prefer sugary foods, while others are drawn to proteins, grease, or moisture.
While ants are generally not aggressive, they can still create problems inside the home. Ants can contaminate food, create persistent infestations, and certain species—such as carpenter ants—can cause damage to wood structures.
For these reasons, it’s important to keep your home or business as ant-free as possible.
Other Factors that Attract Ants:
Different types of ants are drawn to different conditions around a property. Some common attractants include:
Electronics & Wiring
Certain ant species are attracted to warm areas around electrical components and wiring.
Moisture
Leaky pipes, dripping faucets, and damp areas around sinks or bathrooms can attract ants looking for water.
Pavement & Foundations
Many ants build colonies beneath sidewalks, patios, driveways, or foundations.
Landscaping
Mulch beds, dense vegetation, and tree branches touching the home can provide easy access for ants.
Old or Decaying Wood
Carpenter ants and other species are often attracted to soft or damaged wood where they can establish nesting areas.

Why Are There Ants In My Home?
Most ant problems actually begin outside the home.
Ant colonies often develop in yards where there is easy access to food, debris, and moisture. Trash cans, fallen food, standing water, and cluttered landscaping can all create ideal conditions for ants.
As the colony grows, worker ants must travel farther to find food. This is when they begin exploring nearby homes.
Once ants discover food inside, they create scent trails that guide other ants directly to the source. This is why you may suddenly notice long lines of ants moving in organized patterns across surfaces.
You may also see ants gathering near sinks, countertops, trash cans, or other areas where food and water are present.

How Ants Get Inside
Ants are extremely small and can enter through even the tiniest openings.

Common entry points include:
• Gaps around pipes
• Cracks in walls or foundations
• Openings around doors and windows
• Damaged screens
• Crevices in brick or wood siding
Once inside, ants are attracted to food waste, crumbs, spills, unsealed leftovers, and moisture sources such as leaky pipes or dripping faucets.
