Pest Control for Senior Living and Health Care Facilities in Kansas
Care settings are different. Residents and patients can be more sensitive to both pests and pesticides. The EPA's toolkit for health care facilities was written with EPA Region 7 and the University of Kansas Health System. It leans on prevention and the least-toxic control that works.
What is integrated pest management?
It is a smart, science-based approach. It focuses on prevention, regular checks, and careful control. Pests need food, water, and shelter. The goal is to take those away.
What does the EPA toolkit suggest?
Seal gaps, fix leaks, and keep doors shut.
Clean food areas daily, and store food in sealed containers.
Clean floor drains and keep sinks and showers from staying wet.
Place dumpsters at least 50 feet from doors.
Use baits, pastes, and gels, or crack-and-crevice treatments, rather than liquid sprays and foggers.
Tell staff 24 to 48 hours before a pesticide application, except in emergencies.
Keep a log of pest sightings, inspections, and treatments.
What about bed bugs in a care setting?
The EPA toolkit says it is not necessary to cancel or delay appointments or procedures for a patient who reports bed bugs. It suggests limiting personal items, using sealed bags for belongings, and treating people with dignity and respect.
What can staff do every day?
Report any sighting right away.
Keep rooms and storage areas free of clutter.
Never bring pesticides from home. Only trained applicators should apply them.
Keep food and drinks in the right areas.
