Roaches are more than a gross problem. For some people, they are a health one. This is not medical advice. Talk to your doctor about asthma or allergies.

How can roaches affect asthma?

The UNC Center for Environmental Health says cockroach allergen is known to cause asthma in preschool-age children, and that it is found in about 2 out of 3 US homes. UF/IFAS Extension says German cockroaches produce allergens that are strong asthma triggers.

What other symptoms can happen?

Penn State Extension says cockroach waste and shed skins contain allergens. Some people get skin rashes, watery eyes, sneezing, stuffy noses, or asthma.

What can families do?

  • Keep food in sealed containers and keep trash lids on

  • Fix leaks, and keep humidity in the 30 to 50 percent range, as the UNC sheet suggests

  • Seal cracks and holes with caulk, copper mesh, or steel wool

  • Use baits and traps instead of bug bombs and sprays, which can also trigger asthma

  • Use sticky monitors to see where roaches are

How should you clean?

UF/IFAS suggests soapy water, then a clean water rinse. It says no-rinse cleaners only spread allergens.

Should you call a professional?
