Roaches hide by day. That means signs can show up before the bugs do. Here is what to look for.

What do cockroach droppings look like?

The UNC Center for Environmental Health says cockroach droppings look like ground coffee or black pepper. Mouse droppings are different. They look like dark grains of rice.

What do egg cases look like?

Penn State Extension says German cockroach egg cases are light brown, purse-shaped, and less than 1/4 inch long. Each holds up to 48 eggs. The female carries the case until it is nearly time to hatch, so you may see one sticking out of her body.

What other signs are there?

  • A musty, oily smell when there are a lot of roaches

  • Roaches in the open during the daytime, which can mean a large group

  • Shed skins and tiny young roaches (nymphs)

  • Sticky monitors that catch roaches overnight

UF/IFAS Extension says you can use your nose as well as your eyes, and says daytime sightings suggest a large population.

Where should you look?

  • Behind and under the fridge, stove, and dishwasher

  • Under sinks and around pipes

  • Inside cabinet corners and hinges

  • Behind appliances and in storage boxes

  • Near drains and in bathrooms
