Cockroaches in Overland Park and KC: What to Know

Moving into a new place or sharing walls with neighbors? Roaches can come along for the ride. UF/IFAS Extension says German cockroaches spread through people, not from outdoors.

How do roaches move into a new home?

Penn State Extension says they travel in boxes, grocery bags, and similar items. UF/IFAS says to inspect incoming items for roaches, and to be aware that people can carry them on backpacks, purses, and clothes.

What do you do before you unpack?

  • Check boxes and bags, especially cardboard

  • Look at used furniture and appliances

  • Use plastic bins for long-term storage, since roaches thrive in cardboard

  • Check under sinks and behind the fridge for droppings

What should you do if you see roaches?

  1. Clean up food and spills, and empty trash each night.

  2. Fix leaks, and seal gaps where pipes enter walls.

  3. Use sticky monitors to see where activity is, as UF/IFAS suggests.

  4. Skip bug bombs. Penn State says they can scatter roaches.

  5. Tell your landlord if you rent, and call a professional.
