Bed bugs have nothing to do with how clean your house is. They are hitchhikers. They ride in on luggage, a used couch, a coat on a hook, a kid’s backpack from a sleepover. Spotless homes get them. Hotels with great reviews get them.

Am I Even Looking at a Bed Bug?
Half the people who call us do not have bed bugs. They have carpet beetles, bat bugs, young cockroaches, or something else entirely.
​
That matters, because the treatments are completely different and the wrong one wastes your money.
​
Adult bed bugs are about a quarter inch long, roughly the size and shape of an apple seed. Flat, oval, brown to reddish brown. Six legs, no wings. After feeding they look swollen, longer, and bright red.
​
Nymphs are the young ones. One to five millimeters and nearly clear, which is why people miss them.
​
Eggs are about a millimeter, white, and usually stuck in clusters in a seam.

The Signs, in the Order People Usually Find Them
Bites. Often in a line or a small cluster, because bed bugs move a little between feeds. Itchy welts that can show up hours or days later. Important: some people do not react to bites at all. No bites does not mean no bed bugs.

Small blood spots on sheets. Usually from a bug being rolled onto during the night.
​
Dark spotting. Tiny black or brown dots on the mattress seam, the box spring, the headboard, or the wall behind the bed. That is fecal staining, and it is one of the most reliable signs.
​
Shed skins. Bed bugs molt as they grow. Translucent, hollow looking shells in a seam or crack.
​
A musty, sweet smell. Usually only with a heavy, long running infestation.
​
Where to Actually Look in a Wichita Home
​
Do not just check the mattress. Start there, then widen out.
​
Mattress seams, piping, and tags
Box spring, especially the underside and the stapled fabric
Bed frame joints and the headboard, including where it meets the wall
Nightstand drawers and the seams of upholstered furniture
Baseboards and carpet edges near the bed
Behind picture frames and wall decor
Inside electrical outlet covers
Apartment and duplex residents: also check the wall shared with a neighbor

Bed bugs are flat enough to slide into a crack the width of a credit card. If a spot is dark, tight, and close to where someone sleeps, check it.
​

What Not to Do
​
These are the four mistakes that make a bed bug job harder, longer, and more expensive.
​
Do not start throwing out furniture. Most mattresses and couches can be treated. Dragging an infested mattress through the house and out the front door spreads bed bugs into every room it passes.
​
Do not move to a different bed. This is the most common instinct and the most damaging one. Bed bugs follow the carbon dioxide you exhale. Sleep on the couch and you now have bed bugs in the living room too. Stay in your bed. It keeps the infestation contained where we can work on it.
​
Do not set off a fogger or bug bomb. They do not reach into the seams and cracks where bed bugs live, and the repellent effect scatters them deeper into walls and into neighboring units.
​
Do not spray store bought product around the bed. Same problem. You kill a few visible bugs and push the rest somewhere harder to reach.
​
​
What You Can Do Right Now, Free
​
Laundry. Wash bedding, clothing, and soft items in hot water, then dry on the highest heat the fabric allows. The dryer does the real work here. Bag items on the way to the laundry room so you are not spreading anything through the house.
​
Vacuum. Mattress seams, the box spring, the bed frame, carpet edges, and baseboards near the bed. Empty the canister into a sealed bag outside immediately.
​
Declutter around the bed. Fewer hiding places means a faster, more thorough treatment.
​
Reduce, do not relocate. Keep everything in the affected room. Do not carry items to another room to sort them.

Bed Bugs in Apartments, Duplexes, and Rentals
​
If you rent in Wichita, a few things are worth knowing.

Bed bugs move between units through wall voids, outlets, and shared baseboards. Treating one unit while the adjoining unit goes untreated is usually why an infestation keeps coming back.

Tell your landlord or property manager early. Waiting makes it worse and makes it harder to sort out who is responsible.

​

Used furniture. Inspect every seam and joint before it comes through the door. Wichita has a lot of good secondhand shopping, and that is also the number one way bed bugs arrive in a clean house.
