Cockroaches in Wichita Homes: What to Know and Do

The German cockroach is the most common roach in homes and apartments, says Penn State Extension. It is small, tan, and fast. Here is what Wichita homeowners should know.

Where do roaches come from?

UF/IFAS Extension says German cockroaches do not come in from outdoors. They spread through people, often on boxes, bags, and secondhand items. A clean home can still get them.

Where do they hide?

Penn State says they like warm, moist spots near dishwashers, stoves, and sinks, plus bathrooms. They hide in tight cracks during the day.

What should you do first?

  1. Clean up crumbs and spills, and wipe counters at night.

  2. Store food in sealed containers, and take trash out each evening.

  3. Fix leaks and dry sinks.

  4. Seal gaps where pipes enter walls.

  5. Skip bug bombs and sprays. Penn State says they can scatter roaches and make the job harder.

  6. Call a professional, and text us a photo of what you see.

Why does it matter?

Roaches can leave allergens that affect some people, including kids. Read Cockroaches and Asthma.
