Do Ultrasonic Mouse Repellers Work?
Short answer: probably not. Three university Extension groups say there is little evidence that sound devices drive mice out of a building.
What does Extension research say?
K-State Research and Extension says there is little evidence that electronic, sound, magnetic, or vibration devices can drive out mice or provide adequate control
MU Extension says there is little evidence that sound of any type will drive established mice from buildings
UNL Extension says researchers found little evidence that these devices drive established mice out or give adequate control
Why do they not work well?
Extension experts point to a few reasons. Ultrasonic sound goes in one direction. It does not pass through walls or furniture. It also fades fast over distance. And mice get used to sounds they hear again and again.
What works better?
Seal gaps with metal or concrete
Use snap traps along walls where you see signs of mice
Keep food in tight containers
Cut down on clutter and hiding spots
Our Rodent Exclusion Guide covers each one.
What about a cat or dog?
Pets may catch a mouse now and then, but K-State and MU both say predators do not give effective control. Pet food and water can even help mice survive.
Quick Answers
Do ultrasonic pest repellers work on mice?
Probably not. K-State, MU, and UNL Extension all say there is little evidence they drive mice out of a building.
Why do mice ignore the sound?
They get used to sounds that repeat. The sound also does not pass through walls and fades with distance.
What is the best way to keep mice out?
Seal gaps bigger than 1/4 inch with metal or concrete, remove food sources, and trap any mice that are already inside.
