How to Seal Mouse Entry Points Around Your Home

Sealing gaps is the most dependable way to keep mice out. Here is a simple walk-around you can do in an afternoon. It follows advice from the CDC and K-State.

What do you need?

  • A flashlight

  • Steel wool or copper mesh

  • Caulk

  • Hardware cloth or metal sheeting

  • Work gloves, because cut metal edges are sharp

How do you seal mouse entry points, step by step?

  1. Start outside. Walk the whole house and look low, near the foundation.

  2. Check where lines enter the house: electrical, plumbing, cable, and gas.

  3. Look at vents, doors, and windows. Add weather stripping where it is missing.

  4. Plug small holes with steel wool. Put caulk around it to hold it in place.

  5. Cover bigger holes with hardware cloth or metal sheeting. Cut it to fit around pipes.

  6. Go inside. Check under sinks, behind appliances, and around dryer vents.

  7. Do not forget the garage and sheds.

What should you not use?

K-State says latex, plastic, rubber, spray foam, and wood are not good fixes on their own, because mice can chew through them. If a door or window edge shows chew marks, K-State suggests adding metal edging.

Should you seal right away?

If you think mice are already inside, trap at the same time. The Sedgwick County Health Department says trapping and sealing together helps stop new mice from moving in. Snap traps are the county's pick for a home.

Then check again once a year. K-State suggests inspecting your home yearly to make sure it is still mouse-proof.

Quick Answers

Is caulk enough to seal a mouse hole?

No. Caulk is soft, and mice can chew it. Use it to hold steel wool in place, not as the only barrier.

Where do I start?

Start outside, low on the house, near the foundation. Then check where pipes, wires, and vents enter.

How often should I check for gaps?

At least once a year. Houses settle, and new gaps can open.
