Seeing a line of ants on your counter is annoying. It does not mean your home is dirty. Ants are scouts. They are looking for food, water, and a safe place to live. Here is how it works and what to do.

Quick Answers

  • Why do ants come inside? Most ants nest outside. Workers wander in for crumbs, grease, sweets, and water.

  • What should I do first? Wipe the trail, seal your food, fix any water problem, and find where they come in.

  • Can I just spray them? A spray kills the ants you see. K-State says insecticides alone seldom end a colony unless the nest is treated.

  • Are carpenter ants dangerous? They do not eat wood. They dig nests in damp or decayed wood, so they can point to a moisture problem.

  • When should I call a pro? When ants keep coming back, when you think the nest is in a wall or under a slab, or when you see sawdust piles.

Why Do Ants Come Into Kansas Homes?

Most nuisance ants nest outdoors. K-State Research and Extension says workers often wander in by chance while they hunt for food. Crumbs, grease, food scraps, and open containers can bring them in by the hundreds. Many indoor problems start in the lawn or near the foundation. Read the full Ants in Kansas guide from K-State.

Which Ants Do We See Most?

Kansas has many kinds of ants. K-State lists these as common around homes:

  • Carpenter ants. Large, reddish-brown to black. They dig smooth tunnels in damp or decayed wood and leave coarse sawdust.

  • Little black ants. Tiny and dark. They nest in lawns and near foundations.

  • Thief ants. Very small, tan to brown. They nest outside and slip in during warm weather.

  • Acrobat ants. They raise their rear end when upset. They nest under boards, stumps, and rocks.

  • Larger yellow ants. Yellow to tan, with a soap-like smell when crushed. They can swarm from crawl spaces in late winter or early spring.

Not sure which one you have? Catch a few in a zip bag. The right ID matters, because different ants like different foods.

Ants or Termites? How to Tell

Winged insects in spring can be ants or termites. As a rule, ants have a pinched waist and bent antennae. Termites have a thick waist and straight antennae. If you are not sure, do not wait. Read Carpenter Ants vs Termites in Wichita or Carpenter Ants vs Termites in Overland Park.

What Should You Do First?

  1. Stay calm. Wipe the trail with soap and water. This clears the scent path.

  2. Seal your food. Use tight containers. Clean up crumbs, grease, and sticky spots. Do not forget pet food.

  3. Fix water. Leaky pipes, damp wood, and wet drains pull ants in.

  4. Trim plants and branches that touch the house or roof.

  5. Watch the trail. Note the window, gap, or outlet where they enter. This helps a lot when you call us.

What About Baits and Sprays?

K-State explains that baits mix food with a slow-acting insecticide. Workers carry it back and share it with the nest. It can take several weeks. Bait works best when it matches what that ant likes to eat. Sprays only reach the ants you can see. Always follow the label, and keep products away from kids and pets.

When Carpenter Ants Are the Problem

Carpenter ants dig into wood. They do not eat it. They like wood that is wet or decayed. K-State says finding the nest is the key, and it can be hard. Once it is found, control usually works. Fix the moisture source too, or the problem can return.

When Should You Call a Pro?

  • Ants come back after you clean and seal food

  • You see trails in more than one room

  • You think the nest is in a wall, or under a concrete slab (K-State says these may need a pro)

  • You see sawdust piles or hear hollow-sounding wood

  • You find winged ants indoors

Ant FAQs

Does seeing ants mean my house is dirty?

No. One crumb or one drop of water can be enough to start a trail.

Why do I see ants in cold months?

A warm home with a food source can keep ants active. K-State notes that larger yellow ants can swarm from crawl spaces in late winter or early spring.

Are fire ants a Kansas problem?

K-State says fire ants are not expected to survive Kansas winters. Their stings are painful and can blister. Get medical care if you have many stings or an allergy.
