Rodent Exclusion in Wichita: Seal Mice Out
If you have mice in your Wichita home, you have two jobs. Remove the mice inside. Then seal the gaps they used to get in. Here is how to think about the second job.
Why do mice move into Wichita homes?
Mice look for food, water, and shelter. When the weather turns cold, a warm house with a small gap looks like a good place to stay. We cover the fall timing in Why Mice Enter Wichita Homes in Fall.
What does the Sedgwick County Health Department say?
The county has a helpful rodent page. Its advice comes down to three steps:
Seal up: close holes inside and outside with caulk, steel wool, metal sheeting, cement, or hardware cloth
Trap up: in a home, use snap traps, and trap while you seal
Clean up: remove food sources and nesting spots, and keep trash and pet food in tight containers

Where should you check first in a Wichita home?
Where the foundation meets the ground
The seal around the garage door
Dryer vents and attic vents
Pipes and wires where they enter the house
Under sinks and behind appliances
K-State Extension says to seal any opening bigger than 1/4 inch, and to use metal or concrete where mice could chew through softer materials.
