Rodent Exclusion in Overland Park and KC: Seal Mice Out
If you have mice in your Overland Park or Kansas City-area home, you have two jobs. Remove the mice inside. Then seal the gaps they used to get in.
Why do mice move into Johnson County homes?
Mice look for food, water, and shelter. A warm house with a small gap can look like a good place to stay when the weather cools. We cover the fall timing in Why Mice Enter Kansas City Homes in Fall.
What does MU Extension say?
MU Extension says the best way to control house mice is to build them out. That means closing every opening they can use to get in.
Seal any opening bigger than 1/4 inch
Steel wool is a good short-term plug
Seal foundation cracks and openings for pipes, vents, and utilities with metal or concrete
Make doors, windows, and screens fit tightly
Cover edges with metal if mice gnaw them
Do not plug holes with plastic sheeting, wood, rubber, or other things mice can chew
K-State Extension gives the same 1/4 inch rule, which is handy for Kansas homes.
Where should you check first?
The base of the house, where the foundation meets the ground
Around garage doors
Around dryer vents and attic vents
Where pipes, wires, and gas lines enter
Under sinks and behind appliances
