What Do Mouse Droppings Look Like? Signs of Mice
Mouse droppings are small and dark, shaped like grains of rice with pointed ends. They are about 1/8 to 1/4 inch long, according to UNL Extension.
What do mouse droppings look like?
They are usually black, though the color can change with what the mouse eats. They do not collect in piles. A house mouse leaves about 50 to 75 droppings a day as it explores, so they end up scattered.
What are the other signs of mice?
Fresh gnaw marks on wood, plastic, or food packages
Nests made of shredded paper, fabric, or dried plant material
Scratching or squeaking in walls or ceilings, mostly at night
A musky smell in areas where mice have been for a while
Tiny tracks in dust
Where should you look first?
Under the kitchen sink
Inside cabinets and drawers
Behind the fridge and stove
Along walls in the garage
In the attic, basement, or crawl space
What should you do first?
Take a photo of what you found. You can text it to us.
Do not sweep or vacuum droppings. That can put dust in the air.
Put on gloves. Spray the droppings with household disinfectant until they are wet, then wipe them up with a paper towel.
Bag the paper towel and throw it away. Wash your hands well.
Look for how the mice got in, then plan to seal it. Our Rodent Exclusion Guide shows how.
These cleanup steps follow advice from UNL Extension and the Sedgwick County Health Department.
Quick Answers
