Mice or Rats? What the Signs Tell You

Size is the first clue. The Sedgwick County Health Department says a mouse can use a hole the size of a nickel. A rat needs about the size of a half dollar.

What do mouse signs look like?

  • Droppings about 1/8 to 1/4 inch long with pointed ends

  • Small, clean gnaw holes in boxes and food packages

  • Nests of shredded paper or fabric in sheltered spots

  • Scratching in walls at night

An adult house mouse is about 5 1/2 to 7 1/2 inches long, including its tail, according to K-State.

What do rat signs look like?

The county says most rats live in nests or burrows. Burrows are holes in dirt or concrete, often under bushes and plants, and rat burrows often have an entrance and an exit. Rats also run the same paths again and again, so look for worn runways along walls and in grass. Gnaw marks on wood and plastic trash cans are another clue.

Why does it matter?

Mouse traps and rat traps are not the same size, and the gaps you need to seal are different. Knowing which one you have saves time. If you are not sure, text us a photo.

Will sealing at 1/4 inch stop both?

Sealing every gap bigger than 1/4 inch blocks mice, and rats need an even bigger hole. See our Rodent Exclusion Guide for what to use.

Quick Answers

How can I tell mice from rats?

Start with size. Mice fit through holes about the size of a nickel, and rats need about the size of a half dollar. Rats also dig burrows and wear down runways.

Do mice and rats get in the same way?

Often, yes. Both look for gaps in the foundation, around pipes, and near doors and vents.

Should I check at night?

The county suggests checking for rodents after dark with a flashlight, since they are most active at night.
