Do Bed Bugs Come Back After Treatment? What to Expect

Seeing a bed bug after treatment feels awful. Take a breath. It does not always mean something went wrong. The EPA says there is no quick fix for bed bugs. It takes time and patience.

Why do bed bugs seem to come back?

  • Treatment often takes more than one visit. The EPA says very few infestations are controlled with only one treatment.

  • Bugs and eggs hide in tiny cracks, seams, and outlets.

  • New bugs can ride in on luggage, bags, or used furniture. See our posts on hotel travel and secondhand furniture.

  • In apartments, bugs can move in from a nearby unit.

How can you tell if treatment worked?

  • Check the interceptors under your bed legs. The EPA says to plan on using them for at least a year, and to check them daily at first.

  • Look at mattress seams and the bed frame for fresh bugs, shed skins, or rusty spots.

  • Keep bedding tucked in so it does not touch the floor.

  • Write down what you find and when. Photos help.

What helps keep them away?

  • Keep your mattress and box spring in zippered encasements.

  • Caulk cracks around baseboards and seal outlet plates.

  • Check used furniture before it comes inside.

  • Bag and dry clothes on high heat after a trip. The EPA says a household dryer on high for 30 minutes kills bed bugs and eggs.

  • Keep clutter low so there are fewer places to hide.
