Sunny fall afternoon. You step outside, and the south wall of your house is dotted with orange beetles. More are crawling around the windows.

If you live in Overland Park, Olathe, Shawnee, or Lenexa, this may look familiar. These are most likely Asian lady beetles. They are annoying, but mostly harmless.

How do I know it is an Asian lady beetle?

K-State describes them as bright orange with spots and a dark, inverted W-shaped marking behind the head.

They are close cousins of the lady beetles in your garden. The difference is what they do in fall: they crowd onto buildings.

Why are they on the sunny side of my house?

K-State says they often gather on the south and west sides of buildings. Those walls soak up the most sun.

Picture a line at a coffee shop on a cold morning. Everybody wants the warm spot by the door.

Why do they want to get inside?

As the aphids they eat disappear and the days get shorter, the beetles look for a place to wait out winter.

K-State lists them among the insects that can overwinter in Kansas homes. Homes, sheds, and garages work just fine for them, and they slip in through small cracks.

Do they bite?

They can. K-State says they have chewing mouthparts and may nip people or animals. Bites are not common.

K-State says they do not carry diseases and calls them "just a nuisance."

Are Asian lady beetles all bad?

No. Outdoors, they are helpful. They eat aphids in crops like alfalfa, soybeans, and sorghum. They just do not belong in your living room.

How do I keep them out?

  1. Caulk gaps around windows, doors, siding, and vents.

  2. Check that your screens fit tightly.

  3. Start on the south and west sides of the house.

  4. Vacuum up any beetles that get inside.

  5. Release live ones outside if they survive the vacuum.

Closing gaps is the best move. The fewer openings, the fewer beetles inside.

Quick answers about lady beetles

Do lady beetles damage my house?

No. They do not chew wood or reproduce inside. They just hide until spring.

Why do they come out in winter?

A warm day can wake them up. Then they wander into rooms.

Can they hurt my pets?

They are not known to carry disease. If your pet seems sick, call your vet.
