Halloween decorations are up. So why does that spider in the garage look so real?

Because it is. If you live in Overland Park, Olathe, Shawnee, Lenexa, or Kansas City, fall brings spiders out in a big way.

Good news: most are harmless, and many are about to disappear for the season.

Why are there so many spiders in October?

Many spiders reach full size by fall. They roam more, and some wander indoors.

Insects also move toward warm buildings when it cools off. Spiders follow their dinner. Think of a food truck parked outside a stadium. The crowd is already there. See our list of fall invaders in Overland Park.

When do spiders go away?

A K-State entomologist says several common Kansas spiders are likely to be out of sight by the end of October.

That does not mean they leave your property. Many tuck into sheds, garages, and basements for winter.

Are any Kansas spiders dangerous?

Very few. The two most talked about are the brown recluse and the black widow. Most other spiders you find at home are not a concern for people.

K-State researchers found brown recluses would rather escape than bite. They like dark spots, so shake out stored items. Here is how to tell: is that a brown recluse?

If you are unsure, take a photo and send it to us. Please do not handle it.

Where should I look for spiders?

What can I do about spiders in my house?

  1. Put on gloves before you move stored items.

  2. Pack holiday decorations in sealed plastic bins.

  3. Shake out shoes and jackets that have been sitting.

  4. Seal cracks around doors, windows, and pipes.

  5. Reduce outdoor lighting at night when you can.

A quick, honest reminder. We manage pests. We do not erase nature. Seeing the occasional spider is normal. The goal is fewer of them near your living space.
