Earwigs have big pincers and a creepy look. University of Minnesota Extension says they are harmless to people, pets, and food. Here is what Overland Park and Kansas City homeowners should know.

Quick Answers

  • Their pincers can't pinch people in a meaningful way.

  • They love damp, dark spots and mostly live outside.

  • They do not breed indoors, so fix moisture and entry points first.

Why do earwigs show up in Overland Park and Kansas City homes?

Earwigs eat decaying plant matter and hide in damp, dark spots. If your home has mulch beds, leaf piles, or stacked wood near the foundation, you are giving them a place to live. The extension says most indoor sightings happen in July and August.

What should you do first?

  1. Vacuum up any you find. Skip squishing them, since they can give off a foul smell.

  2. Thin out mulch and clear leaf piles near the foundation.

  3. Check gutters and downspouts so water moves away from the house.

  4. Caulk gaps around doors, windows, vents, and faucet lines.

  5. Try a rolled-up newspaper trap overnight. Shake it into soapy water in the morning.

What does not help?

The extension says pesticides are generally not effective once earwigs are already inside. Removing hiding spots and extra moisture works better.
