If you wait until you are getting bit to think about mosquitoes, you are already behind.

In Overland Park, Leawood, Olathe, and across the Kansas City metro, mosquito season ramps up fast in May. Warm days plus spring rain equals perfect breeding conditions. The mosquitoes you see in June and July are the babies of the ones breeding right now.

Here is the simple truth. Mosquito control is much easier when you start early.

The 7-Day Rule for Mosquito Season in Kansas City

Infographic explaining the mosquito lifecycle and the "7-day rule" for Kansas City homeowners. Includes a checklist to "Tip and Toss" standing water in pet bowls, gutters, and bird baths.

Most mosquitoes can go from egg to adult in about 7 to 10 days. That means any standing water sitting around your yard for a week is a mosquito factory.

Common breeding spots people miss:

  • Saucers under flower pots

  • Clogged gutters holding water

  • Tarps and pool covers with low spots

  • Bird baths that do not get refreshed

  • Old toys, buckets, and wheelbarrows

  • Tree holes and hollow stumps

  • Corrugated drain pipes

The KC metro has plenty of mature trees and shaded yards, which mosquitoes love. Walk your yard once a week. Dump anything holding water. That single habit can knock down your mosquito problem in a big way.

Why professional treatment helps

A yard treatment targets the places mosquitoes rest during the day. Adult mosquitoes hide in shaded shrubs, tall grass, and the underside of leaves. A professional barrier spray reduces the resting population, which means fewer bites for you and your family.

We recommend starting treatments in May and continuing through September. This gives you the longest stretch of relief during the time you actually want to be outside.

Health matters too

Mosquitoes are not just annoying. In Kansas and Missouri, mosquitoes can carry West Nile virus. The Centers for Disease Control has helpful information on prevention here: https://www.cdc.gov/mosquitoes/prevention/index.html

Wearing repellent, draining standing water, and treating your yard are all part of a good plan.
