May is one of the busiest pest months in the Kansas City metro. Warmer days, spring rains, and lush green yards bring a lot of activity to homes in Overland Park, Leawood, Olathe, Lenexa, Shawnee, and across the state line into Kansas City Missouri.

If you have noticed more bugs around the house lately, you are not imagining it. Here is a quick rundown of what we see most often in May, why these pests show up, and a few simple things you can do at home.

What Pests Are Most Active in May in Overland Park and Kansas City?

The five pests we get the most calls about during May are:

  1. Ants

  2. Mosquitoes

  3. Spiders

  4. Wasps

  5. Subterranean termites

Each one becomes active for a different reason. Some are looking for food. Some are looking for water. Some are starting brand new colonies for the year.

Spring rains push ant colonies closer to the surface. Once temperatures stay in the 70s, ants start sending out workers to find food and water. Kitchens, pantries, and pet bowls are common targets.

In Overland Park and Kansas City, the most common spring ants are odorous house ants, pavement ants, and carpenter ants. Carpenter ants are especially common in older homes near mature trees, which describes a lot of Prairie Village, Mission, and the Brookside area.

Mosquito season in the Kansas City metro usually picks up in late April and runs strong through October. May is when most homeowners notice the first wave.

Mosquitoes only need a small amount of standing water to lay eggs. A forgotten flower pot saucer, a sagging gutter, or a low spot in the yard is plenty for them to get started. Properties near creeks like Indian Creek, Tomahawk Creek, or Mill Creek often see heavier pressure.

Spider activity ramps up in spring because their food source, other insects, is multiplying. Garages, sheds, basements, walkout windows, and window wells are common spots in Johnson County homes.

Most spiders you see are harmless, but brown recluse and black widow spiders do live throughout the KC metro. Both prefer quiet, undisturbed spaces like storage boxes, garage corners, and woodpiles.

Paper wasps and red wasps start building small spring nests in May. You will often find them under eaves, in mailboxes, on patio furniture, and around playsets.

A small nest in May is much easier to handle than a large nest in August. This is the best month to deal with them.

Eastern subterranean termites swarm in spring across the Kansas City area. Warm, humid days after a rain are their favorite conditions. If you see flying insects with two pairs of equal length wings near a window or porch light, it could be a termite swarm.

Termite pressure in the KC metro is real. Older homes in established neighborhoods on both the Kansas and Missouri sides have a long history of subterranean termite activity. Why Overland Park and Kansas City See So Much Pest Activity in May

A few local factors make May especially active across the metro:

  • The KC area warms up quickly after a cool April, and humidity climbs fast.

  • Spring rains saturate the ground and push insects toward foundations.

  • Newer south Johnson County neighborhoods are built on land that was recently farmland or pasture.

  • Older neighborhoods in Prairie Village, Mission Hills, Roeland Park, and across the state line have mature tree canopies that support large insect populations.

  • The metro has hundreds of creeks, ponds, and low-lying areas that create ideal mosquito habitat.

None of this means your home has a problem. It just means May is when pests are easiest to notice.

Simple Kansas City Pest Control Steps for May

You do not need to be an expert to make your home less attractive to pests. Try these basics:

  • Walk the outside of your home and look for standing water.

  • Trim back shrubs and tree branches that touch the house.

  • Seal gaps around windows, doors, and utility lines.

  • Keep mulch a few inches away from the foundation.

  • Empty and refill pet water bowls daily.

  • Knock down small wasp nests before they grow.

These small steps make a real difference. They also help any professional treatment work better and last longer.

Frequently Asked Questions About May Pests in Overland Park and Kansas City

When does mosquito season start in Kansas City? Mosquito activity usually picks up in late April. By mid May, most yards across the metro have noticeable mosquito pressure that lasts through October.

Do termites really swarm in the Kansas City area? Yes. Eastern subterranean termites swarm in spring across the entire metro, on both the Kansas and Missouri sides. Warm humid days after a rain are peak swarming weather. A swarm near your home is a strong sign that a colony is nearby.

Are spring ants different from summer ants? The species are similar, but spring ants are usually scout workers from established colonies waking up for the year. Treating early often prevents larger issues later in the summer.

How often should I have pest control service in Overland Park or Kansas City? Quarterly service works well for most homes. Some properties benefit from monthly or every 6 to 8 weeks during peak season, especially if you have heavy tree cover, a wooded lot, a walkout basement, or a creek nearby.

Do you require a contract? No. Bug Shockers does not use contracts. You can adjust or stop service any time.

Do you serve both Kansas and Missouri sides of the metro? Yes. Our Overland Park branch serves homes and businesses across the entire Kansas City metro, including Johnson County and the Missouri side.
